Steve and Connie Ballmer have announced that Terri Ludwig, a housing and community development leader, will join the Ballmer Group as president of philanthropy, as the couple continues to pour millions of dollars into anti-poverty programs.
For the past seven years, Ludwig has served as chief executive of Enterprise Community Partners, a nationwide nonprofit.

The Annie E. Casey Foundation Board of Trustees today announced that Lisa Hamilton will become the Foundation’s next president and chief executive officer effective Jan. 1, 2019. Hamilton is the Foundation’s executive vice president and chief program officer. She will succeed Patrick McCarthy, who announced his retirement after 25 years at the Foundation, nearly nine as its top leader.
“We are fortunate to have someone with Lisa’s experience and vision step into this important role,” said Michael Eskew, chair of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees. “Lisa is an enormously talented leader who brings a deep understanding of the needs of kids and families, and she is the ideal leader to build on the terrific accomplishments of Patrick McCarthy. Her ability to use research and data to develop innovative strategies, and to partner with communities and decision makers to spread what works, will enable the Foundation to help all children realize their potential.”
Widely respected for her significant role in creating an even more robust, effective philanthropic and nonprofit sector over two decades as a mission-driven leader and coalition builder, Enright joins the Council after 17 years as President and CEO of Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO).
Under Enright’s leadership, the Council will sharpen its focus on shaping the public view of philanthropy as positive agents in advancing the public good, providing important public policy and advocacy and engaging in national programs that add unique value in the current landscape. Ultimately, the Council will prioritize giving its members more of the support they need to strengthen the mission of philanthropy to ensure a vibrant democratic society and create a more equitable world.
JDRF, which raises money to support scientists seeking a cure for Type 1 diabetes, announced today that Derek Rapp plans to step down as the group’s leader. JDRF raised nearly $200 million in private support last year. Rapp, who has been CEO since 2014, will rejoin the group’s international Board of Directors after a new leader is hired, a spokeswoman said in an email.
The board plans to recruit a seasoned nonprofit leader to help accelerate programs, leverage big data, form strategic partnerships, and continue to drive commercial investment.
Six Kent County nonprofit organizations have completed the first phase of an intensive training course designed to enhance their ability to secure funding through grants. The program, launched by the CenDel Foundation and the Delaware Alliance for Nonprofit Advancement (DANA), focused on improving the grant writing skills for individuals involved in the process of applying for critical funding.
Representatives from Central Delaware Habitat for Humanity, Arise, Hope Medical Clinic, Mom’s House, Minds Over Matter Initiative and Uplift the Community attended the Fellowship for Fundraising Excellence Program, which consisted of three half-day seminars.
Beebe Healthcare and Beebe Medical Foundation are proud to announce that the Derrickson family and Atlantic Theatres’ The Movies at Midway will launch a multi-year fundraising initiative in support of the I Believe in Beebe campaign.
The Movies at Midway will unveil a newly designed, refillable popcorn bucket, and will donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each bucket to the construction of Beebe Healthcare’s new Specialty Surgical Hospital at the Rehoboth Beach Health Campus.
The funds raised from the popcorn bucket initiative are in loving memory of the Derrickson family’s sister, Rosemary Burton (Jan. 17, 1955-March 2, 1974). The Derrickson family’s goal is to contribute $500,000 with this five-year effort.
“This is another example of a strong and loyal partnership with a locally owned family business which truly believes and gives locally to make the lives of Sussex County residents better! The Derricksons are lifelong supporters of Beebe and know the importance of giving back to the community which supports their business. It’s truly an extraordinary example of families helping families and neighbors helping neighbors,” shared Judy L. Aliquo, president and CEO of Beebe Medical Foundation. “As moviegoers enjoy their popcorn, they will also enjoy the fact that part of their payment is going to help Beebe create the Next Generation of Care.”
Bloomberg Philanthropies has expanded its American Cities initiative and is giving grants to hundreds of arts nonprofits.
The point is to help small and midsize organizations become more robust, more efficient, and more resilient—but not necessarily bigger, according to Kate D. Levin, who oversees Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Arts Program. “AIM isn’t about putting organizations on a growth trajectory,” she says. “You can do some things at scale that are great and necessary. But a smaller size can be much more effective.”
Buccini/Pollin Group, Inc.late last month held an afternoon of celebration for their 25 anniversary. Associates enjoyed a restaurant crawl along Market Street that concluded at the new Residences at Mid-town Park.
Each associate put together a bucket of love consisting of toys, art supplies, activities and a note of encouragement for a local child exposed to domestic violence. Aiding children in Wilmington is a cause championed by company co-founders Chris and Rob Buccini.
BPG associate Mandi Lemons teamed up with Buckets of Love, a Jefferson award-winning local charity founded by two sisters from Delaware.
“It was truly a gift for our associates to have the opportunity to work with these two inspirational young ladies that are Co-Founders of a charity impacting hundreds of children annually,” Lemon said.
Child Inc., the recipient of the 200 buckets of love, will be distributing the buckets to children exposed to homelessness, domestic violence and abuse in Wilmington.
“Child Inc. was thrilled to receive the 200 Buckets of Love for the children we serve,” says Lori Sitler, executive director.
Delmarva Power received the 2018 Angel Award from Beautiful Gate Outreach Center based in Wilmington.
The award recognizes Delmarva Power’s 15-year partnership with the organization. During this time, Delmarva Power has provided more than $25,000 in support of the Beautiful Gate Outreach Center’s work toward HIV/AIDS prevention and education.
Delmarva Power’s Community Outreach Team also provides educational and resource assistance to the center through energy assistance presentations, information on theLow Income Energy Assistanc Program and related services.
In 2017, Delmarva Power contributed more than $1.3 million to local nonprofits, while its employees volunteered 11,300 hours to help hundreds of organizations throughout Delaware and Maryland.
The Beautiful Gate Outreach Center works to eliminate the spread of HIV/AIDS and assist in the continuous care of those infected with and affected by the disease throughout Delaware.
Here's something to feel good about: Total charitable giving in the United States reached record levels in 2017, with an estimated $410 billion donated to various causes by groups and individuals, according to Charity Navigator.
Of that total, 5% — or nearly $21 billion — came from corporations, up 8% from the previous year.
