Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Council (Council) is an organization with a long and proud tradition of excellence serving the girls of Delaware and the Chesapeake Bay region (Delmarva Peninsula). We unleash the G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader) in every girl, preparing her for a lifetime of leadership - from taking a night-time hike under the stars to accepting a mission on the International Space Station; from lobbying the city council with her troop to holding a seat in congress; from running her own business today to tackling cyber security tomorrow.
Our CEO has retired and the organization is seeking a leader who will guide our Council to even greater heights. Our Council, founded in 1962 as an affiliate of GSUSA, has a membership of 7,500 girls and 3,400 adults supported by 37 full-time and 65 part-time staff with a budget of $4.6 million. Our headquarters is located in Newark, DE, a regional office in Salisbury, MD and 4 camps in Delaware and Maryland.
In leading the foremost girls' organization who develops girls to young women of courage, competence, and character, the CEO will implement a vision for the 21st century that builds on the Councils excellence, while identifying new and relevant opportunities for growth. Considerable research and analysis will guide the CEO in the planning, implementation, assessment, and refinement of the current strategic plan. Immediate priorities include:
- Identifying opportunities for current and future programs and services designed to develop girls through the engagement of the staff, board and volunteers.
- Diversifying the councils financial and business model to achieve sustainability;
- Anticipating future organizational needs by retaining talent and building staff and volunteer capacity and expertise.
- Analysis and recommendations for business model and marketing enhancements in a time of heightened competition for girl participation.
Accomplishment of these priorities will result in the growth of girls participating across our Delmarva footprint, a contemporary model for volunteering and a framework for the diversification of funding to drive sustainability.
The ideal candidate will possess broad-based business skills with a minimum of five years comparable executive-level experience including profit and loss responsibility, and eight or more years in leadership roles of progressive responsibility. The new CEO will have demonstrated ability in fiscal management of budgets in excess of $4 million, marketing, fundraising and/or direct sales skills and experience. The candidate will also have demonstrated ability to provide leadership skills in management, supervision, and development of staff and the cultivation and retention of volunteers.
The CEO will be a person of strong ideals and integrity who has a combination of vision, strategic, and operational planning abilities who can serve as a role model of best management practices and effective decision-making. The CEO will demonstrate a style of leadership that embraces partnerships, transparency, collaboration, and empowers stakeholders to achieve their highest potential, all the while satisfying accountability measures mutually agreed upon by the CEO and the board. Vital to this position is a CEO that possesses a reputation as an open, approachable, ethical, and enthusiastic leader who is actively involved and visible. The CEO will be recognized as a community and business leader in the Council's jurisdiction or have the personal and executive presence to achieve this quickly after appointment. It is essential that the CEO have a strong commitment to inclusion, serving girls from all cultural and economic backgrounds.
Additional qualifying experience includes nonprofit board relations, volunteer relations, and marketing. It is expected that candidates will possess a minimum of an undergraduate degree, with an advanced degree preferred.
This position is one of prominence and high visibility in the community, and it is expected that the CEO will be an experienced spokesperson with outstanding communication skills and the ability to interact with the broadest range of audiences. The CEO must exhibit a strong executive presence and a passion for the mission necessary to be the voice for girls and a champion for girl empowerment.
