About the Job

The Director of Philanthropy is responsible for setting a new direction for institutional fundraising and supporter engagement based upon an emerging strategic plan for 2019-2029. He/She reports to the Director and CEO and is a member of the senior management team that sets organizational direction, reviews institutional priorities, develops annual budgets, and works closely with the Board of Trustees.

He/She directs the Philanthropy Division, including the responsibilities of Leadership Gifts; Membership and Annual Giving; Corporate and Foundation Relations; Planned Giving; Special Events; Corporate Events; and Adult/Community Events. These divisions are comprised of approximately 25 full- and part-time employees as well as a large cadre of volunteers.

The Director of Philanthropy is charged with significantly increasing the overall contributions of the Philanthropy Division through new fundraising initiatives, overseeing and directing a new office of Events and Protocol, and working with the CEO to manage the creation and implementation of a new strategic plan for the financial and educational advancement of Winterthur. To this end, he/she will actively work with the CEO to develop a new fundraising strategy for the institution, will identify prospects and solicit major gifts, and will manage the strategic solicitation of gifts based on fundraising priorities identified in collaboration with the CEO.

Requirements

Develops and implements Winterthur’s fundraising strategy, including special capital or endowment campaigns; actively cultivates new donors while stewarding current supporters; works closely with the CEO and Director of External Affairs to identify and solicit prospects that generate increased revenues to support institutional operating, restricted/special purpose, and capital budgets.

Provides strong, dynamic leadership to Winterthur’s fundraising arm. Projects annual fundraising goals and operating budgets; prioritizes work flow, reviews organizational effectiveness, progress, and performance of all Philanthropy staff.

Oversees and directs the office of Events and Protocol, developing a set of guidelines and a communication strategy that provide for improvement in the coordination and execution of Winterthur’s Special Events, Corporate Events and VIP Tours; ensures that all events meet Winterthur’s high standards for gracious hospitality, are financially solid, and advance the mission.

With the CEO and the Strategic Planning Task Force of the Board of Trustees, develops a new strategic plan with cost estimates, timing, and fundraising goals; collects and analyzes benchmarking data from comparable institutions; and assists in advancing a new strategic direction for Winterthur that builds upon the institution’s core competencies while reaching and engaging new audiences.

Collaborates with the Director of External Affairs on the identification and solicitation of new prospects, traveling to or with potential donors as required.

Serves as a principal ambassador for Winterthur, representing the institution at national gatherings, events, and to current and prospective donors.

Undertakes other duties as assigned in the support of Winterthur’s advancement.

Minimum: B.A. or B.S. and ten years of fundraising experience at a senior level. Preferred: M.A. in American history, material culture, decorative arts or an M.B.A. and 15 years of fundraising experience at increasing levels of responsibility with demonstrated success in one or more capital campaigns.

  • Skilled in strategic planning, major donor relations (individual and institutional), program administration, and operations management
  • Outstanding communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, and presentation skills
