The mission of the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission (JUSFC), an independent federal agency, is to support reciprocal people-to-people understanding, and promote partnerships that advance common interests between Japan and the United States.
Grants are provided to nonprofit organizations in the United States and Japan that deal with Japanese studies, the study of the United States, public affairs, or the arts.

In addition, the Fellowship Program for Advanced Social Science Research on Japan, a joint activity of the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission and the National Endowment for the Humanities, supports research on modern Japanese society and political economy, Japan’s international relations, and U.S.-Japan relations.
