The Arthur L. and Elaine V. Johnson Foundation

  • August 01, 2020

The Arthur L. and Elaine V. Johnson Foundation supports nonprofit organizations providing handicap assistance animals, and provides funding for nature conservation and the preservation of wildlife.

The Foundation's program areas include the following:

Handicap Assistance Animals
The highest priority is dogs to assist the blind, followed by other animals specially trained to perform tasks that a physical impairment prevents a person from doing for himself or herself.

The Foundation does not fund therapy, autism, PTSD, facility, or emotional support animals. Organizations that fund such animals in addition to animals to assist the physically handicapped are strongly encouraged to provide an accounting of how many of each type of animal are placed as part of their application.

In addition, the Foundation does not fund organizations that require recipients to pay (other than a nominal fee) or to do significant fundraising for the organization.

Nature Conservancy
The highest priority is for direct conservation (e.g., preservation or restoration of natural land, or animal conservation or preservation) and science-based conservation activities (i.e., research designed to lead to better land and wildlife management).

The Foundation does not fund organizations whose primary focus is education or advocacy, or animal sanctuaries that are not focused on wildlife rehabilitation and release.

Wildlife rehabilitation efforts that are not primarily focused on threatened, endangered, or otherwise significant species are rarely funded.

In both program areas, the Foundation seeks to be a catalyst for change and therefore prefers to fund projects that will assist organizations in long-term change, such as expanding capacity or undertaking a new area of service. Requests for funds to support ongoing program costs are given a lower priority.
