Henry E. Niles Foundation

  • December 31, 2020

The mission of the Henry E. Niles Foundation is to help in the nurturing and uplifting of people in need. The majority of the Foundation's grantmaking is focused in the northeastern United States, although grants may be made in other regions of the country or abroad.

The Foundation strives to support humanitarian efforts, including faith-based endeavors, that:

  • strengthen education, including special education, literacy, etc.;
  • fight economic hardships through self-help opportunities; and,
  • enhance public health and sanitation on a global basis.

The Foundation currently focuses on the following areas:

  • Education
    This area includes primary, secondary, and higher education for those motivated individuals who are unable to obtain the benefits of quality education without assistance.

  • Economic Self-Sufficiency
    This area includes, but is not limited to, job training, the encouragement and support of entrepreneurship, mentoring, and micro-credit initiatives.

  • Health and Independence
    Special interests include medical and public health assistance for the elderly, poor, disadvantaged, and disabled.

The Foundation favors programs that:

  • address long-term solutions to the causes of problems, as distinguished from programs that simply treat the symptoms;
  • address the intersection of its various program interests;
  • test new program models, including pilot programs; and,
  • promote collaborative efforts among groups and organizations.

The Foundation will generally not provide grants to the following:

  • organizations not determined to be tax exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code;
  • general fundraising drives;
  • individuals;
  • endowments;
  • government agencies; or,
  • organizations that subsist mainly on third-party funding and have demonstrated no ability or expended little effort to attract private funding.
