The Sociological Initiatives Foundation supports research and social action projects in the U.S. that focus on understanding and finding solutions to a broad array of social problems. The primary goal is to encourage research, including community-based research, that supports and promotes necessary social change.
Preference is given to projects that investigate laws, policies, institutions, regulations, and normative practices that may limit equality in the United States and Puerto Rico. Priority is also given to projects that seek to address racism, xenophobia, classism, gender bias, exploitation, or the violation of human rights and freedoms. Research that furthers language learning and behavior and its intersection with social and policy questions is also supported.
The Foundation specifically supports research that focuses on improving services and systems and increasing positive social and physical conditions through:
Preference is given to areas that tend to be under-funded and for projects of a size where a Foundation grant can make a difference.
Grants are restricted to 501(c)(3) organizations. The Foundation does not make grants directly to individuals for any purposes; however, it welcomes applications from academic institutions and other qualified organizations wishing to sponsor research projects by individual scholars or practitioners.
No awards are made for dissertation research, honoraria, or political purposes. The Foundation does not provide operating support or capital grants.
