Understanding and Supporting Small Foundations to Be Effective Grantmakers

  • September 19, 2019
  • 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
  • Webinar

Foundations with few or no staff, philanthropic families, and individual donors collectively make about 80 percent of all charitable donations in the United States. These smaller funders often have to “do more with less,” making careful choices about their resources in order to have a meaningful impact.

Exponent Philanthropy and Harder+Company Community Research partnered in 2018 to survey hundreds of leanly staffed foundations throughout the country. This session will share key findings about how these funders approach everything from grantmaking and staffing to diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. We will also discuss best practices for foundations with few or no staff and explore opportunities for consultants to be effective partners to this segment of the philanthropic sector.

By the end of this session, participants will:

  • Know more about common experiences and needs among small foundations
  • Understand best practices for management and grantmaking among small foundations
  • Identify insights and opportunities for professionals/consultants to support the work of small foundations
